How do I measure my roofline for fascias and soffits?
Measure the horizontal length along the front and the back of the house at gutter level, then add the sloping edges of any gable ends if those are boxed in too. You can do it from the ground with a tape along the wall, since the roofline is the same length as the wall below it. On a typical three-bed semi the total is around 20 to 25 metres. Round up rather than down.
Should I replace the guttering at the same time?
Almost always, yes. The guttering has to come off to fit new fascias anyway, so the labour and the access are already paid for. Refitting old guttering onto new boards costs you the fitting time and leaves a worn part on a job you have just paid to renew. Doing both together adds roughly £25 to £60 a metre, which is far less than a separate visit with its own scaffold.
Do fascias and soffits need capping or full replacement?
Capping, which means cladding over the existing timber in uPVC, is cheaper and quicker, but it hides whatever is underneath and traps damp against timber that may already be rotten. Full replacement takes the old boards off so the rafter feet can be seen and repaired. If the timber is sound, capping is a reasonable saving. If there is any sign of rot or the boards are soft, insist on full replacement, and be suspicious of a quote that does not say which one you are getting.
