Tile calculator

Enter your measurements in metres. Everything updates as you type, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Figures include 10% for cuts and breakages, more for a patterned or diagonal layout. Adhesive is estimated at about 5kg per square metre using a 6mm notched trowel, and grout at about 2kg per square metre, both of which rise with larger tiles and wider joints. Buy tiles by the box and keep a few spares from the same batch.

Common questions

How many tiles do I need?

Work out the area to tile, then divide by the size of one tile. A 300mm by 300mm tile covers 0.09 square metres, so about 11 of them per square metre. The calculator does it for you and adds 10% for cuts and the odd breakage.

How much tile adhesive and grout do I need?

As a guide, about 5kg of adhesive per square metre with a 6mm notched trowel, and around 2kg of grout per square metre. Both go up with larger or thicker tiles and wider grout joints, so treat these as a starting point and round up.
