Large-format porcelain and natural stone cost more to buy and are heavier and slower to lay than standard ceramic, and removing old tiles or making good a poor wall adds labour before any tiling starts. Simple ceramic tiles on a sound, flat wall sit at the £40 per m² end; premium tiles on a wall that needs work reach £120.
Should the shower area be tanked before tiling?
Yes. In a shower or wet area the wall and floor should be tanked (waterproofed) before tiling, because grout and tiles are not fully watertight on their own and water will otherwise track into the structure. A good tiler includes tanking of the wet zone in the quote; if it is not mentioned, ask, because it is the part that prevents damp and rot later.
Does tiling a bathroom add value to your home?
Good tiling helps a sale more than it adds hard value. At £40 to £120 per m², fresh, well-laid tiles make a bathroom feel clean and finished, which matters to buyers.
