Stump size is taken from the tree size, since a bigger tree leaves a bigger stump. Regional figures use the same multipliers as every other page here. What it does not price, because it varies far too much to put a number on honestly: crane or climbing access, working over a road or a neighbour's roof, and taking the timber away rather than chipping it on site. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order or in a conservation area needs council consent before any work, and that is free to apply for but can take up to eight weeks.

Why are tree removal quotes so different from each other?
Because most of the price is risk and access, not the tree. A tree that can be felled in one piece into open garden is a fraction of the cost of the same tree next to a conservatory, over a road, or reachable only through a house. Dismantling a tree in sections from a rope and harness, or hiring a crane or cherry picker, changes the job completely. That is why this calculator gives a range and why three real quotes are worth getting.
Do I need permission to remove a tree?
Sometimes, and it matters, because doing it without consent is a criminal offence. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order, or stands in a conservation area, you need to apply to your local council first. Applying is free. TPO decisions can take up to eight weeks and conservation-area notices six. Your council's tree officer will tell you if a tree is protected, and a reputable tree surgeon will check before quoting.
Is stump removal included in the price?
Usually not. Most quotes are for felling and clearing the branches, leaving the stump at ground level. Grinding it out is a separate visit with a different machine, which is why it is a separate line here. If you want to plant, turf or pave over the spot, you need the stump ground out; if it is at the back of a border, you can often leave it.
Should I use a qualified tree surgeon?
Yes. Felling is genuinely dangerous work and the cheapest quote from someone without insurance is the expensive option if something goes through your roof. Ask for public liability insurance of at least £2m and check it is current, look for an arborist with NPTC or City & Guilds chainsaw certificates, and be wary of anyone who knocks on the door offering to top a tree they noticed.
