You will order more grass than your garden measures
This is the part that catches people out, and it is why a quote can look higher than the square metres suggest. Artificial grass is made in rolls, almost always 4m wide and sometimes 2m, and you buy whole widths. You cannot buy 3.2m of a 4m roll.
So a lawn 5m by 5m, which is 25 square metres of garden, needs two 4m widths run down its length. That is 10 linear metres of roll, or 40 square metres of grass, for a 25 square metre lawn. The offcut is not wasted exactly, since it can join in elsewhere, but you pay for it.
Turning the lawn the other way round in your head is worth doing, because it sometimes changes the answer. This calculator tries both and uses whichever needs less. A long narrow lawn is much more efficient than a square one.
What the per square metre price actually covers
The £40 to £90 range is supplied and fitted, and the spread is mostly the grass itself. A budget pile at the bottom end feels thin underfoot and flattens in a couple of summers. Mid-range is where most people land. The top of the range is a dense, longer pile with a realistic colour mix, and it is the thing you notice every day.
Underneath, the price covers lifting the old lawn, a compacted sub-base, a weed membrane, and joining and infilling. That groundwork is what decides whether the lawn stays flat, and it is the first thing a cheap quote leaves out. Ask what depth of sub-base is going in.
When the groundwork option applies
Tick it if the lawn is being taken off a hard surface, if an old artificial lawn or a patio has to come up, if the ground is heavy clay that holds water, or if levels need changing. Any of those adds £15 to £35 per square metre before a roll is unwrapped.
Leave it unticked for a normal grass lawn on reasonable ground, which is the usual case and is what the base figure assumes.

Is artificial grass cheaper than real turf?
No, it is several times more to install. Real turf is a few pounds per square metre laid and artificial grass is £40 to £90. The case for artificial is the running cost and the time: no mowing, no watering, and it stays usable in winter where a real lawn turns to mud. Over ten years the maintenance saving closes some of the gap, though not usually all of it.
How long does artificial grass last?
Around 15 to 20 years for a good quality lawn that was laid on a proper sub-base, and considerably less for a thin pile on poor groundwork. What fails first is usually the base moving or the infill washing out, not the grass fibres, which is why the preparation matters more than the product.
Does artificial grass need planning permission?
No, laying artificial grass in a garden is not development and needs no permission. The thing to think about instead is drainage, because the ground underneath is being covered with a compacted base: water needs somewhere to go, either through a permeable sub-base into the ground or to a soakaway. Leaseholders and anyone in a conservation area should check their own restrictions.
