How the price is built up
A per-door price covers the door, its hinges, handle and latch, and the carpenter's time to trim and hang it so it closes cleanly. Solid and hardwood doors cost more to buy and are heavier and slower to hang. Fitting a new lining and architrave adds both labour and materials. Most of the price is the door and ironmongery, with the rest being the carpenter's labour. A basic primed door costs about £25 to £60, the handle, latch and hinges £15 to £40, and labour £80 to £150 per door.

How long do internal doors last?
An internal door is not really a wearing item and there is no useful lifespan figure for one. A decent solid or engineered door lasts as long as you want it to; what dates a door is fashion, and what fails is the ironmongery, because hinges work loose and latches wear. A door that has dropped or sticks in summer is nearly always a hinge or a swollen edge rather than a dead door, and doors move with humidity, so one that binds in a wet winter and closes fine in July wants easing rather than replacing. Hollow-core doors are the exception, since there is very little inside them to repair once a panel is dented or a lock has been forced. One other thing worth knowing before you buy a set at £100 to £550 a door fitted: some internal doors are not a free choice. In England, the door between a house and an integral garage has to be an FD30S (E30Sa) fire door, rated to limit smoke leakage as well as fire, with a self-closer, and a loft conversion normally needs fire doors rated at least FD20 (E20), which do not need self-closers, on the rooms opening onto the escape stairway, including upgrading existing doors where necessary. Those cost more than a standard door, and what is acceptable is confirmed by building control rather than by the joiner.
What is the cheapest way to replace internal doors?
Choose white primed hollow-core doors, reuse the existing linings and handles where they are sound, and have several done in one visit. This can bring the cost down to around £100 to £150 per door fitted.
Do I need new door linings to fit fire doors in a loft conversion?
Usually not. Government guidance on Approved Document B, which applies in England, says it should be possible in most cases to keep the existing frame, or lining, when new fire doorsets go in for a loft conversion, but the door, frame and ironmongery are judged as one assembly. Fire doors are thicker and heavier, so the door stops may need replacing or moving and extra fixings put back to the structure, the joint around the frame should be fire stopped, and the gap between door and frame kept to about 3 to 4mm. The door's test report shows the frame it was tested in.
