Do I need a chimney for a log burner?
No. If you do not have a chimney, an installer fits an insulated twin-wall flue up through the roof or the wall. It adds cost but works in most homes.
Does a log burner need to be signed off?
Yes. A HETAS registered installer can self-certify the work, or building control signs it off. You need this for safety and when you sell. A carbon monoxide alarm goes in at the same time: Approved Document J requires one in the room with a new solid fuel appliance, and at £15 to £30 it is the cheapest line on the whole job.
Can I fit a log burner myself?
Legally yes, but the installation must comply with building regulations and be signed off, either by a registered installer who self-certifies or by building control if you do it yourself, and it needs a carbon monoxide alarm in the room under Approved Document J. Once you add the building control fee and the flue components, the saving over a professional install is usually small, and an incorrectly installed stove is a carbon monoxide risk. Most people are better off paying the £1,500 to £3,000 for a certified installation into an existing chimney.
Do log burners add value to a house?
Estate agents regularly list a stove as a feature buyers ask for, and a fitted burner at £1,500 to £5,000 is one of the cheaper improvements with visible appeal. Any value uplift is not guaranteed though, and in smoke control areas the stove must be an exempt (DEFRA-approved) model, so keep the paperwork to show buyers.
