How the price is built up
Most firms work from a minimum call-out that covers a survey and one treatment, commonly £50 to £120. A rodent or bed bug job adds follow-up visits at £80 to £150 each, which is how a £90 first visit becomes a £180 to £300 job. Proofing to block entry points is a separate £100 to £400. Same-day or emergency attendance adds £40 to £120, or 50 to 100 per cent on smaller jobs. Nearly all of it is labour, travel and the return visits. The products themselves are a small part of the bill, which is why a job needing three visits costs roughly three times one needing a single visit even though the same pest is being treated. Proofing is the exception: there the materials and the time both count, which is why it is quoted separately.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Ask how many visits the price covers before you book, since a low headline figure is often the first visit only
- Check what your council still offers, because rats and mice are free or subsidised in many areas
- Get the proofing quoted at the same time, as paying for treatment every year costs more than sealing the gaps once
- Book a routine slot rather than a same-day call-out where you can, which avoids a 50 to 100 per cent premium
- Do the preparation the technician asks for, because a failed treatment through poor prep is not covered by the guarantee
