How the price is built up
The table prices the stated treatment package, not an initial visit followed by an automatic extra charge. Its rodent allowance is £80 to £180 for a course of two to three visits. A provider quoting per visit may use a different structure: compare the total for the expected course before booking. Proofing at £100 to £400 and emergency attendance at £40 to £120 are separate calculator options. The guide does not establish that every local provider offers a package within these bands. Nearly all of it is labour, travel and the return visits. The products themselves are a small part of the bill, which is why a job needing three visits costs roughly three times one needing a single visit even though the same pest is being treated. Proofing is the exception: there the materials and the time both count, which is why it is quoted separately.
Compare a complete treatment course
For the guide’s rodent package, £80 to £180 plus the optional £100 to £400 proofing allowance gives £180 to £580. Selecting emergency attendance adds £40 to £120. This is calculator arithmetic, not a promise that treatment alone prevents a return.
Ask whether the price includes the initial inspection, all scheduled visits, monitoring and removal of equipment at the end. List the affected rooms or outdoor areas and any preparation you must do. Agree how additional visits are authorised and charged before work starts.
Council and private quotes: compare the same service
Check your own council’s published service and eligibility first, then compare it with a private quote for the same pest, property and visit count. A concessionary resident price, a single wasp-nest visit and a multi-visit rodent course are different offers.
Record the date, VAT treatment, response time, follow-ups and exclusions beside each price. If a council does not provide the service, that does not establish what a local private firm will charge. Avoid choosing solely on a low first-visit price.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Ask how many visits the price covers before you book, since a low headline figure is often the first visit only
- Check what your council still offers, because rats and mice are free or subsidised in many areas
- Get the proofing quoted at the same time, as paying for treatment every year costs more than sealing the gaps once
- Book a routine slot rather than a same-day call-out where you can, which avoids a 50 to 100 per cent premium
- Do the preparation the technician asks for, because a failed treatment through poor prep is not covered by the guarantee

In London, pest control typically costs around £180 per treatment, about 20% above the UK average of £150. In the North, Scotland and Wales the guide figure is nearer £150.

Does pest control include blocking the entry points?
Rarely, and this is where quotes differ most. The treatment kills what is already there. Proofing is the work that stops it coming back: sealing gaps, fitting bristle strips, wire wool and mesh, repairing air bricks. It is usually quoted separately at £100 to £400 and on a rodent job it is the part that decides whether you pay once or every year.
How many visits should a treatment include?
The £80 to £180 rodent course here includes 2 to 3 visits, so do not add an extra visit fee to those same included visits. Ask what a visit beyond the package costs, how long the package lasts and whether proofing is separate. Different pests and treatment methods can require different schedules.
Can I treat a pest problem myself?
For ants, a single wasp nest at ground level or a small flea problem, shop products often work and cost a few pounds. For rats, mice, bed bugs or cockroaches they usually do not, because the professional products are stronger and the technician knows where the harbourage is. The common outcome of a DIY attempt on those is a delay and a bigger job.
Is there a guarantee?
Ask for the written terms rather than assuming a guarantee is included. Check its duration, which pest and rooms it covers, whether a return visit is free, and whether preparation or proofing is a condition. A new infestation may be excluded even if the original treatment is covered.
