What changes the price?

The things that move uPVC door repair prices most:

01

What has failed: an adjustment is the cheapest job, a whole locking mechanism or a full glass panel the dearest

02

Whether the part is a common size or has to be matched or ordered in, which is more likely on an older door

03

The grade of a new cylinder: an anti-snap cylinder costs more than a standard one

04

The size of the glass, and whether it is toughened or laminated safety glass

05

Who you book: London firms sit towards the top of each range

06

Evening, weekend and emergency visits, which cost more

How the price is built up

Most door repair firms quote one fixed price for the job, part and labour together, so compare the totals rather than the parts. A simple adjustment sits at the bottom of the range. Prices climb when a part has to be matched or ordered for an older door, when the glass is a large toughened panel made to measure, or when the whole locking mechanism has to come out. A respray is priced by the door, and some firms charge extra to spray the frame. A door repair is mostly the fitter's time, travel and the stock of parts they carry. The part itself, such as a cylinder, hinge or gearbox, is normally included in a fixed price for the job; a made-to-measure glass unit or a whole locking mechanism adds more for the part.

Common questions

How much does it cost to repair a uPVC door?

Most uPVC door repairs cost £60 to £300, and about £100 is typical. From the prices UK door and lock repair firms publish on their own websites, realigning a dropped door is usually £60 to £100, new handles £80 to £100, new hinges £75 to £125, a new cylinder lock £85 to £125 and a new gearbox £125 to £175. A whole locking mechanism, a full-height glass panel or a composite respray costs more. The figures include VAT where the firm charges it.

How much does it cost to replace a uPVC door lock?

Replacing the cylinder, the part the key goes into, usually costs £85 to £125 fitted. A standard cylinder is typically about £85 to £110 and an anti-snap cylinder, which is designed to resist being snapped, about £120 to £140. If the fault is the locking mechanism inside the door rather than the cylinder, expect more: a gearbox is usually £125 to £175 and a whole mechanism £175 to £300.

How much does a uPVC door gearbox replacement cost?

Usually £125 to £175 fitted, from 12 firms' published prices, and about £150 is typical. The gearbox is the case in the middle of the multipoint lock, under the handle, and it is the usual cause of a handle that has gone floppy or will not lift to lock the door. Some firms call the whole locking strip the gearbox, and replacing all of it costs more, usually £175 to £300, so ask which part they mean.

How much does it cost to fix a dropped uPVC door?

Usually £60 to £100. A door that has dropped, catches the frame or is hard to lock can normally be realigned by adjusting the hinges and the keeps on the frame, which is a short job. If the hinges are worn they need replacing, usually £75 to £125. Get it done early: forcing the handle on a door that is out of line is a common way to damage the gearbox, which costs £125 to £175 to replace.

How much does it cost to replace the glass in a uPVC or composite door?

About £60 to £85 for a small sealed unit, and £250 to £300 for a full-height toughened door panel at the firms that price one, so the size of the glass decides most of the cost. Glass in a door is a critical location: the Planning Portal says safety glazing should be provided within any glazed door up to 1500mm from floor level, so a replacement unit should be toughened or laminated. A misted unit can be replaced on its own without changing the door.

How much does it cost to respray a composite door?

Usually £225 to £300 for the door itself, from five firms' published prices, and some firms charge extra for the frame. A respray covers fading, scratches and a change of colour. Two of the firms spray uPVC and composite doors at the same price.

Is it worth repairing a uPVC door or should I replace it?

Repair it if the frame and the door itself are sound. Most faults come down to one part, and even a whole new locking mechanism at £175 to £300 is a fraction of the price of a new door. Replace the door if the frame is damaged, the door is badly warped or several parts have failed at once, and note that a replacement external door has to meet the Building Regulations: the Planning Portal says an external window or door is a controlled fitting, so the regulations set standards for its replacement.

Can I repair a uPVC door myself?

Some jobs, yes. Changing a euro cylinder is a common DIY job if you measure the old one correctly, and the hinges on many uPVC doors can be adjusted with an Allen key. Replacing a gearbox or a whole mechanism means matching the part to your door's lock, and glass in a door must be safety glass, so most people use a firm for those. If you live in a flat, check with the building's management before touching the front door.

Can I repair the front door of my flat?

Check with the building's management first. In England, government guidance says the Fire Safety Act 2021 confirms that flat entrance doors are in scope of the Fire Safety Order, and that a resident who wants to alter or change their front door should do so with the knowledge and agreement of the responsible person, usually the freeholder or managing agent. Repairs to a fire door should be done by a competent contractor. In blocks with storeys over 11 metres, the responsible person also has to try to check every flat entrance door each year.

Do door repair firms charge a call-out fee?

Most of the door and lock repair firms we checked do not charge a separate call-out. Some set a minimum charge instead, commonly about £80 to £90, which includes the first piece of work, and a few add a call-out on top of the repair. Evening, weekend and emergency visits cost more, so book a normal weekday visit for anything that is not urgent.

How do I stop a uPVC door lock failing?

A little maintenance goes a long way. Lubricate the locking points and hinges once or twice a year, keep the door adjusted so it closes without you having to lift hard on the handle, and have a sticking or dropped door realigned early. An adjustment at £60 to £100 costs far less than the gearbox or mechanism that a door left out of line can wear out.

What if the repair does not last?

Go back to the firm first. A repair is a service, and under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill. Some firms also guarantee the parts they fit, so ask what the guarantee covers and for how long before you book.
