Is a wet room more expensive than a bathroom?
Usually a little, because the entire floor is tanked and the drainage is more involved. A compact en-suite wet room can still be done for around £5,000 to £7,500.
Do wet rooms cause damp problems?
Not if they are tanked properly. A correctly waterproofed wet room with the right falls and ventilation is no more prone to damp than a standard bathroom.
What are the disadvantages of a wet room?
Everything in the room gets damp unless you fit a screen, storage needs thinking through, and the tanking (waterproofing) has to be done properly because a failed wet room leaks into the fabric of the house. In a family home, replacing the only bath with a wet room can also narrow the pool of future buyers. Done well, none of these are problems; done cheaply, all of them are.

How long does a wet room last?

One practical consequence: a wet room retile is not just tiling, because the waterproofing should be renewed at the same time, so budget closer to a new wet room than to a tiling job.
Can I build a wet room myself?
Some of it, but not all. Tiling and fitting you could tackle, yet the tanking and floor drainage are the parts that fail expensively if they leak, so most people pay a specialist for those. Any new electrics, such as a shower pump, lighting or an extractor, must be done by a Part P qualified electrician, and gas or boiler changes by a Gas Safe engineer. On a £5,000 to £15,000 room, a hidden leak wipes out any DIY saving fast.
